About Us / History
Catholic education in San Antonio has a rich and lengthy history, characterized by the sacrifices made by countless religious and lay individuals. The Ursuline Sisters arrived in San Antonio from France in 1851 and opened the first Catholic school in San Antonio, Ursuline Academy. Shortly thereafter, the Marianists arrived in 1852 and established St. Mary's Institute, which is now Central Catholic High School. Since that time, more than 40 other Catholic schools have been opened in the Archdiocese of San Antonio with the help and support of local parishes and religious orders such as the Brigidines, Oblates, Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and many others.
