Statement of the Archdiocese of San Antonio concerning fatal shooting at Holy Spirit Church

The Archdiocese of San Antonio expresses its deepest condolences and offers its prayers to the family of Marcos Villegas-Martinez, identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office as the victim of the fatal shooting which occurred at 12:30 a.m. this morning in the parking lot of Holy Spirit Church. According to law enforcement — and has been reported in the media — an altercation which began at a wedding reception in the parish hall there continued as an argument in the church parking lot, which was the site of the deadly shooting. Just minutes afterwards police stopped a vehicle nearby which matched the description of the truck which fled the scene. A gun was reported to have been found in the vehicle and the two occupants were arrested. Holy Spirit Parish and the archdiocese are cooperating with the police as they continue to investigate this crime. We deplore this senseless violence which has cost one man his life and has forever changed the lives of the two individuals expected to be charged with homicide. The parish and archdiocese share in the pain of this tragedy.
