Statement of Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, regarding severe storms which impacted areas of San Antonio

I, and all the faithful of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, offer our prayers and support to those impacted by the four tornadoes which roared through the northeast part of the city late Sunday evening and early Monday morning of Feb. 19-20. We will be with them as they begin the long process in the next several months of cleaning up and rebuilding damaged homes and businesses and replacing lost possessions. I have communicated with some of these individuals personally.

Our own St. Anthony de Padua Church campus sustained severe damage to numerous buildings at its site.

The one thing we can be truly thankful for is that the Lord has blessed us with not a single fatality from these devastating events.

Catholic Charities of the archdiocese and local parishes have been providing immediate assistance and a quick response, namely Blessed Sacrament Church, whose gymnasium served as a Red Cross shelter in the hours after the storms, as thousands were left without power.

We also express our gratitude and appreciation to the men and women who worked around the clock to bring relief to our neighbors by clearing debris from the streets, restoring power, and providing for public safety.

Amid natural disasters such as this, we hope such events draw us closer together as brothers and sisters in taking care of others’ needs.

Todos los fieles de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio y yo, ofrecemos nuestras oraciones y apoyo a los afectados por los cuatro tornados que rugieron a través de la parte noreste de la ciudad el domingo por la noche y el lunes muy temprano. Estamos con ellos al comenzar el largo proceso, que se prolongará por los próximos meses, de limpiar y reconstruir casas y negocios dañados, y reemplazar posesiones perdidas. Lo único de lo que podemos estar verdaderamente agradecidos es que el Señor nos ha bendecido con el hecho de que no se perdió una sola vida humana debido a estos eventos devastadores.

Caridades Católicas de la Arquidiócesis y las parroquias locales han prestado asistencia inmediata y han respondido rápidamente, a saber, la Iglesia del Santísimo Sacramento (Blessed Sacrament), cuyo gimnasio sirvió de refugio a la Cruz Roja en las horas posteriores a las tormentas, ya que miles quedaron sin energía eléctrica.

También expresamos nuestro aprecio y agradecimiento a los hombres y mujeres que estuvieron trabajando las 24 horas al día para brindar alivio a nuestros vecinos, al limpiar los escombros de las calles, restaurar la energía eléctrica y proveer seguridad pública.

En medio de desastres naturales como este, esperamos que estos eventos nos acerquen más como hermanos y hermanas en el cuidado de las necesidades de los demás.
