Statement from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, on the death of San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem

I, along with Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette, and all the faithful of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, offer our prayers and deepest condolences to the wife, children, and family of deceased San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood, and the brave men and women of the San Antonio Fire Department, who are also family. Our heartfelt thoughts are also with the two firefighters who suffered injuries in the same blaze that resulted in the death last night of Scott Deem, a six year veteran of the department. We wish these firefighters a complete and speedy recovery.

This is a sad and devastating event for our city, and we are all in mourning. It also serves as a stark reminder that our first responders face danger and risk on every call, protecting us and putting themselves in harm’s way for others in the line of duty. The sacrifices they and their families make are valued and respected, and we offer our most profound gratitude.
