Statement from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, concerning Las Vegas shooting

The news to which we awoke this morning was beyond horrific; the largest deadly shooting event in this country’s history. The scene was a country music festival in Las Vegas; an event in which attendees were anticipating a fun-filled night with friends and frivolity. That this gathering became a massacre defies description. The numbers are hard to fathom; at this time the reports are that there are almost 60 dead and over 500 injured. As we began today, a month in Respect for Life, we commit ourselves to every day pray for these faithful departed. Every life has worth, and we respect the dignity of every human person without exclusion. We want to be as close as possible to the hearts of those that are suffering. On this, the feast of the Guardian Angels, we pray fervently for these victims, their families, the survivors who witnessed this scarring scene, and the first responders, who through their expedient actions saved countless lives. May Mary our Mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for all of us.

La noticia con la que despertamos esta mañana fue más que horrenda; el mayor tiroteo mortal en la historia de este país. La escena era un festival de música country en Las Vegas; un evento en el que los asistentes esperaban una noche llena de diversión y recreación con amigos. El hecho de que esta reunión se haya convertido en una masacre se resiste a ser descrito. Los números son difíciles de asimilar; en este momento los informes indican que hay casi 60 muertos y más de 500 heridos. Al comenzar hoy el mes dedicado al Respecto a la Vida, nos comprometemos a orar cada día por estos fieles difuntos. Cada vida tiene valor y respetamos la dignidad de cada persona humana sin exclusión. Queremos estar lo más cerca posible de los corazones de aquellos que están sufriendo. El día de hoy, en que celebramos la fiesta de los Santos Ángeles Custodios, rezamos fervientemente por estas víctimas, sus familias, los sobrevivientes que fueron testigos de esta traumática escena, y los socorristas, que a través de sus ágiles acciones salvaron incontables vidas. Que María nuestra Madre, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ruegue por todos nosotros.
