St. Teresa relic comes to San Antonio

October 15 marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 500th birthday of the great Spanish saint and first female Doctor of the Church — Teresa of Jesus (Avila).

The original walking cane of St. Teresa is in pilgrimage on the Path ofLight/Camino de Luz throughout five continents in an historical trip through locations significant to the Discalced Carmelite Order including missions in Africa.

St. Teresa was characterized by her roving spirit, her tireless work for the church, her faith, her great love and deep prayer. She strove to be a ā€œgood friend of Jesus.ā€

The walking cane arrived in San Antonio from Mexico on Nov 27.It will only visit three cities in the United States: San Antonio, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The relic will then be taken to Korea.

On Nov. 28, following Mass at the Discalced Carmelite Nuns Monastery, the relic was taken in procession from the San Damiano Convent to the Basilica of the Little Flower, where a liturgy was again celebrated. Visitation was then held in the afternoon prior to a Holy Hour for Vocations and vespers. The day concluded with Mass and a closing ceremony.
