Sister María Elena memorial Mass celebrated at MACC

A memorial Mass in honor of Sister María Elena González, RSM, the third president of the Mexican American Catholic College (formerly the Mexican American Cultural Center), was held in the chapel on campus December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Bishop Emeritus Michael Pfeifer, OMI, of the Diocese of San Angelo was celebrant at the liturgy.

Sister María Elena served as president of MACC for 14 years. She was also the first woman chancellor for the Diocese of Lubbock, and served as a consultant for the Committee for Hispanic Affairs for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 1994 to 2002. In addition, she was a member of the bishops’ Sub Committee for the National Encuentro 2000.

During her time in the Alamo City she was a member of the San Antonio Express-News Advisory Board. Sister María Elena received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal from Pope John Paul II
