This report is made by the Archdiocese of San Antonio to the parishes and faithful within the Archdiocese concerning the revocation of faculties to hear confessions from Rev. Henry Clay Hunt, III. The information in this report is shared in order to ensure that the faithful do not invalidly celebrate the Sacrament of Penance with Rev. Hunt, and in order to clarify certain related misperceptions that have reasonably caused scandal and distress among the faithful.

On September 25, 2019 Archbishop Gustavo asked his Vicar for Clergy and his Finance Officer to meet with Rev. Henry Clay Hunt, III, to discuss what appeared to be his misappropriation of significant funds given in the second collection at St. Joseph Parish in Del Rio. In this meeting, he became defensive, refused counsel and expressed disregard for archdiocesan norms. He additionally became abusive and insubordinate during the meeting, showing blatant contempt for the Vicar for Clergy and the Finance Officer. As a result of Rev. Hunt not showing remorse or offering the Archbishop an explanation of his actions or restitution of the misappropriated funds, the Archbishop opened a canonical investigation into the matter.

The Archdiocese later received reports that Rev. Hunt was causing confusion and division at St. Joseph Parish in Del Rio, continuing to involve himself in the pastoral decisions of his former parish and criticizing publically on social media the decisions of the new pastor. Because of Rev. Hunt’s interference at St. Joseph’s and refusal to provide information related to the misappropriation of second collection funds, on June 3, 2020 the Archbishop gave Rev. Hunt a singular penal precept to help him resolve these matters, and to repair the scandal he had caused.

With the stated goal of helping Rev. Hunt come to a change of heart so that he could offer a sincere apology to the Vicar for Clergy, the Finance Officer, and the pastor of St. Joseph Parish, the Archbishop required him to make an 8 day spiritual retreat; meet at least monthly with a spiritual director; and meet at least weekly for one year with a counselor or psychologist. When Rev. Hunt objected to these three requirements, the Archbishop allowed him to simply make a retreat and form a spiritual direction relationship of his own choosing. Because Rev. Hunt was delayed in complying with this agreement, the Archbishop extended the time for him to accomplish this, but to date has not received confirmation from Rev. Hunt that he has completed either. In order to allow Rev. Hunt time to focus on these requirements and on his process of reform, the Archbishop limited his ministry to his assigned sacramental chaplaincy to the incarcerated within our Criminal Justice Ministry. He additionally forbade Rev. Hunt, with a warning of ecclesiastical penalty, to use social media to comment on the decisions or activities of Catholic leaders, parishes, or organizations. When Rev. Hunt violated this restriction by criticizing on social media the Archbishop’s dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass during the pandemic, the Archbishop initiated an administrative penal process to determine the appropriate response to Rev. Hunt’s disobedience. This process was recently concluded with the decision to give Rev. Hunt a canonical warning with the hope that he will reengage the process of the penal precept given to him and, being reformed, repair the scandal that he has caused and make appropriate restitution. During this canonical process, Rev. Hunt was given the standard salary and benefits but restricted from public ministry. He has since been restored to his assignment as sacramental chaplain to the incarcerated within the Criminal Justice Ministry of the Archdiocese, though he has refused to report to this assignment. His exercise of ministry is currently limited to this assignment.

On the conclusion of the investigation into the misappropriation of funds from the second collection at St. Joseph parish, the Archbishop determined that Rev. Hunt illicitly redirected $20,443.82 in donations designated by the donors for the Rice Bowl; the Bishop’s Oversees Appeal; the Catholic Home Missions; the Pontifical Mission Society, the Catholic Mission among Black and Native Americans; the Collection for Latin America; the Retired Religious; the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; the Archdiocese for Military Services; the Special Collection for the Philippines; and the Archdiocesan Collection for Catholic Schools. Rev. Hunt gave $14,772 of the misappropriated donations directly to Rev. Anthony Anderson, SOLT, and Rev. Dennis Mary Dugan, SOLT. In his decree, the Archbishop ordered that Rev. Hunt make personal restitution of these funds to the business office of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, which was to forward the restored funds entirely and without any charges or fees to the harmed organizations and beneficiaries. While the deadline for Rev. Hunt to make this restitution was December 7, 2020, he has not made any restitution or made any contact with the Finance Officer of the Archdiocese to begin this restitution, despite receiving two formal canonical warnings related to his failure to obey.

While investigating the above mentioned concerns, the Archdiocese confirmed several reports that Rev. Hunt asked sexually inappropriate and imprudent questions while celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, even with minors, and imposed inappropriate and imprudent penances on the penitents in the celebration of the same sacrament. The code of canon law requires that a bishop revoke the faculties to hear confessions from priests only for a grave cause, and after consultation and investigation, the Archbishop determined that these constituted a grave cause making it necessary for him to remove Rev. Hunt’s faculties to hear confessions. In doing this, the Archbishop’s goal is to be able to restore Rev. Hunt’s faculties to hear confessions once these matters have been resolved. In the decree, the Archbishop tells Rev. Hunt that he looks forward to working with him to restore these faculties. You are being notified of this out of caution because Rev. Hunt would presently invalidly absolve sins, except in certain specific circumstances foreseen in canon law, such as when the penitent is in danger of death.

The Archbishop has preferred, for more than 18 months now, to engage these difficulties privately with Rev. Hunt, as a shepherd with his priest. All of his communications have sincerely expressed a desire that Rev. Hunt return to obedience and to his priesthood, and all of his communications have offered a path for Rev. Hunt to do so. The Archdiocese has found it necessary, for the good of the faithful, to share this information now in order to clarify the completely inaccurate explanations that certain persons have circulated, whether maliciously or themselves deceived, about the circumstances of Rev. Hunt’s absence from ministry.

Archbishop Gustavo is aware that many of the faithful in the Archdiocese of San Antonio love and care deeply for Rev. Hunt. He joins his own love and pastoral solicitude to theirs, and asks that those who care most for Rev. Hunt will encourage him to reengage the process of the penal precept that was given to him for his reform and work with the Archbishop for the reparation of scandal and the restoration of justice.

Más tarde la Arquidiócesis recibió informes de que el Pbro. Cuando el Pbro. Hunt se opuso a estos tres requerimientos, el Arzobispo le permitió simplemente hacer un retiro y formar una relación de dirección espiritual de su propia elección. Debido a que el Pbro. Hunt se demoró en acatar este acuerdo, el Arzobispo extendió el tiempo para que él lo cumpliera, pero hasta la fecha no ha recibido confirmación del Pbro. Hunt de que haya completado alguna de sus exigencias. Para que el Pbro. Hunt tuviera tiempo de concentrarse en estos mandatos y en su proceso de reforma, el Arzobispo limitó su ministerio a la capellanía sacramental asignada a los encarcelados dentro de nuestra Pastoral Penitenciaria. Además, prohibió al Pbro. Hunt, con una advertencia de sanción eclesiástica, utilizar redes sociales para comentar sobre las decisiones o actividades de líderes, parroquias u organizaciones católicos. Cuando el Pbro. Hunt. Este proceso concluyó recientemente con la decisión de dar al Pbro. Hunt hiciera esta restitución era el 7 de diciembre de 2020, no ha hecho restitución alguna ni se ha puesto en contacto con la Oficial de Finanzas de la Arquidiócesis para comenzar esta restitución, a pesar de recibir dos amonestaciones canónicas formales relacionadas con su incumplimiento de obediencia.

Mientras investigaba las preocupaciones mencionadas anteriormente, la Arquidiócesis confirmó varios informes de que el Pbro. Hunt hizo preguntas sexualmente inapropiadas e imprudentes mientras celebraba el Sacramento de la Penitencia, incluso con menores, e impuso penitencias inapropiadas e imprudentes a los penitentes en la celebración del mismo sacramento. El Código de Derecho Canónico requiere que solamente por causa grave un obispo revoque las facultades de escuchar confesiones de los sacerdotes, y después de consultar e investigar, el Arzobispo determinó que estas acciones constituían una causa grave, por lo que era necesario que retirara las facultades del Pbro. Hunt para escuchar confesiones. Al hacer esto, el objetivo del Arzobispo es poder restaurar las facultades del Pbro. Hunt para escuchar confesiones una vez que se hayan resuelto estos asuntos. En el decreto, el Arzobispo le dice al Pbro. Hunt que espera trabajar con él para restaurar estas facultades. A ustedes se les notifica esto por precaución porque el Pbro. Hunt absolvería los pecados de manera inválida, excepto en ciertas circunstancias específicas previstas en el derecho canónico, como cuando el penitente está en peligro de muerte.

El Arzobispo ha preferido, desde hace más de 18 meses, abordar estas dificultades en privado con el Pbro. Hunt, como pastor con su sacerdote. Todas sus comunicaciones han expresado sinceramente el deseo de que el Pbro. Hunt regrese a la obediencia y al ministerio, y todas sus comunicaciones han ofrecido un camino para que el Pbro. Hunt lo haga. El Arzobispo Gustavo es consciente de que muchos de los fieles de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio aman y se preocupan profundamente por el Pbro. Hunt; une su propio amor y solicitud pastoral a los de ellos; pide que quienes más se preocupan por el Pbro. Hunt lo animen a retomar el proceso del precepto penal que le fue dado para su reforma, y trabajen con el Arzobispo para la reparación del escándalo y la restauración de la justicia.
