Archbishop Gustavo issues letter regarding relief efforts for Mexico City earthquake

September 22, 2017

My dear people of God,

I, and the people of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, offer our prayers and condolences to those in Mexico City and the Mexican states of Mexico, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Guerrero, and Oaxaca, who were affected by the devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake which struck there on Sept. 19. It was about two weeks ago that another earthquake occurred just off the coast and terribly impacted the Oaxaca and Chiapas coastal region, as well as parts of Guatemala.

We know at this time that more than 200 people have died, and that number will surely rise. Many building are also unsafe, and the fear is palpable. The sorrow is immense, but we are united with the people of Mexico, our familia here and across the border, in their suffering.

Just as the residents and government of Mexico pledged their support and assistance to us in our time of need for the horrible aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we do the same in union as one body of Christ.

The Mexican Bishops’ Conference has invited the people of God to unite in solidarity for the reconstruction of their country. The bishops there are coordinating a response on recovery operations through the Catholic humanitarian organization Caritas, in collaboration with other church agencies and dioceses.

We here in Texas are still coping with the destruction and disastrous consequences of Hurricane Harvey. The people of the archdiocese were extremely generous in their response to the second collections taken at parishes this month at the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in their financial and material donations to Catholic Charities. Therefore, I have asked Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Antonio to be the point of contact to collect funds for earthquake victims. The organization will then forward all the donations to the archdiocese for 100 percent distribution to Caritas Mexicana. For more information on giving opportunities, see the donate button on the front page of the Catholic Charities website at or call their offices at (210) 222-1294.

In his papal audience on Sept. 20, Pope Francis said, “I want to express my closeness and prayer to all the beloved Mexican population. Let us all raise our prayers together to God so that he may welcome into his bosom those who have lost their lives, comfort the wounded, their families, and all those affected.” The Holy Father also offered his prayers for the rescue personnel.

The faith of the people of Mexico is strong. As she always does, may Our Lady of Guadalupe, our Mother, hear our prayers and give us comfort in our times of trial.

I thank you for your generosity,

Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS
