Madre Eisquia Silva

Religious Teacher

St. Mary Magdalen School

Madre Eisquia serves as a religion teacher for the for the early childhood grades. Madre’s graceful, loving leadership has made St. Mary Magdalen School better, and Madre has improved the lives of parents, students, and staff.

Hailing for Mochoacán, Mexico, as a religious member of the Hijas Del Espiritu Santa, Madre arrived at the school in 2015 without knowing English. Madre embodies the adage often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel; if necessary, use words.”

Madre boasts a diverse arsenal of evangelization weapons. Her smile can make even the crankiest, seemingly incorrigible kid brighten up. She wields a tiny CD player that plays infectious praise and worship songs in Spanish. Once Madre presses play, even the student most reticent to speak Spanish will morph into Vicente Fernandez and start belting out, “Alma de mi alma!”

Madre has inquired pre-kindergarten and elementary children to sing to God in a new “lengua.” Amidst the excitement and fears of little children, Madre’s calm, firm voice, patience, and smile abundantly bless the school environment.

The teacher work room is her makeshift evangelization office, and she can often be found cleaning it or lending a hand to helping teachers rushing to make copies for their next class. The common perception that teachers’ lounges can be epicenters of griping and finger-pointing holds no water at St. Mary Magdalen, due in no small part to Madre’s loving presence.

St. Mary Magdalen is a beautifully diverse school, with teachers, students, and families from all over the world and over 50 zip codes in San Antonio, as well as myriad religious, linguistic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Madre serves as a bridge to, from, between, and among all the groups.
