July President’s Corner

“Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now.”

-Proverbs 3:27-29

Recently we celebrated Independence Day — a time to remember the Declaration of Independence and our freedom as a country. We should also use this day and every day to remember our military members and the sacrifices they and their families make so America can continue to be the “land of the free.” The armed forces have always had a strong presence in San Antonio, so much so, we have earned the nickname of “Military City, USA.” In fact, many of us work with, live by, are friends with or are related to a current or former military member — some of you are one yourself. With this strong, consistent military presence in our city, it is imperative we care for those brave men and women and their families as they handle all of the challenges resulting from protecting our freedom and also when they move into civilian life.

I would like to highlight one of our lesser-known programs, the William N. Mullin Military Family Relief Program. This program helps ease the transition from military to civilian life by providing financial or material assistance, counseling, financial coaching or access to additional services to those who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. In the past 12 months, we have served 167 active duty military members and veterans as well as 333 direct dependents for a total of 500 individuals helped. For the past two years, through the help of the master sergeants at joint base Fort Sam Houston, five service men and women and their families are selected each year to receive additional financial assistance from our program. These families are recommended based on the circumstances they currently face.

Oftentimes, these families are experiencing a crisis situation which the military does not have resources to assist with financially. This year, a particular case comes to mind, especially after celebrating Father’s Day. Staff Sergeant (SSgt) A. was assigned to San Antonio four years ago due to health complications with his newborn son. His son, now 3 years old, continues to battle severe health issues including a tracheostomy which requires 24-hour care. While an in-home nurse provides assistance during the day, SSgt A. and his wife pick up the late shift and tend to the toddler’s needs throughout the evening and night.

Not only do they meet the challenge of caring for a special needs child, they also raise six other children between the ages of 1 and 16. Additionally, SSgt A. has recently had some health problems of his own after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. His symptoms not only make it hard for him to serve his country but also serve his family. Due to these challenges, the family is in the process of moving to a new, larger home which can better accommodate their needs. The pending expenses associated with moving can be daunting, but it will improve the overall quality of life for SSgt A. and his family.

What can $1,150 do for this family? Although it is a one-time financial assistance, this will come at a time when the family needs it most. $1,150 could cover the cost of several new mattresses, moving costs and many other household needs that may present themselves. Most importantly, the thought behind this gift is priceless to this family. SSgt A. is a perfect example of selfless service to his country, community and family. It is but a small favor to recognize him and answer his call during this difficult time.

Two other ways Catholic Charities shows its appreciation to our active duty military, veterans and soldiers in transition is through our “Valentines for Veterans” and “Bed-In-A-Bag” programs. Both of these programs are just a small reminder for our current and former military members that they are loved and are not alone through life’s struggles. Words cannot adequately express our sincerest gratitude to all who serve, have served and continue to serve as well as their selfless family members.

We would ask you to keep not only Catholic Charities in your prayers but also our nation’s service men and women, veterans and their families. Thank you for your continued support.
