Father Tony Schueller, SSS, dies April 24

Father Tony Schueller, SSS, 71, was born Jan. 31, 1950 to John and Mary (née Heilmann), both deceased in Belgium, Wisc.

He is the brother of Donald, Gerald, John (all deceased) Kathleen (deceased), and survived by his sister Patricia. He was close to his sister-in-law Clara Koepp.

He entered religious life and the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament High School Seminary in Waupaca, Wisc., in 1964, professed vows on May 8, 1970, and was ordained a priest on Oct. 22, 1977.

He was a gifted writer and speaker, and an extremely humble and kind man who touched many by his eucharistic vision and living. His passion was collaboration with the laity, especially through the formation of Associates of the Blessed Sacrament.

Through his gifts he held many positions in his religious order and church. He was parochial vicar in Albuquerque, N.M. (1977-79), vocation and novice director (1979-84), Catholic Center chaplain of the Diocese of Salt Lake City (1985-92), Emmanuel editor (1990-2002 and 2013-2019), parochial vicar of Saint Paschal Baylon in Highland Heights, Ohio (1991-95), provincial superior (1995-2002 and 2014-2021), pastor of Saint Jean Baptiste in New York, N.Y. (2003-2013), director of the Center for Eucharistic Evangelizing (2013-2015), and pastor of St. Joseph Church in downtown San Antonio (2019-21).

Father Tony died April 24 while recovering from brain surgery at the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Facility. Those interested may contribute to his honor by supporting the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, 5384 Wilson Mills Road, Highland Heights, OH 44143.

Visitation, rosary, and vigil for the deceased were held at St. Joseph’s Church on April 26. Funeral services were held the following day, on April 27.

Father Anthony was then transferred to Ohio for visitation and service on April 30 at St. Paschal Baylon Church in Highland Heights, Ohio. The funeral Mass was held May 1. The rite of committal was private.
