Catholic Charities announces beginning of 40 Cans for Lent Food Drive

Catholic Charities is once again leading the 40 Cans for Lent Food Drive. 40 Cans for Lent is an effort to fight hunger and raise awareness of food insecurity in the community. During the 40 Days of Lent, participants are asked to collect one canned good each day, starting Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday, in solidarity with those who may not know where their next meal may come from. This food drive is also in remembrance of the 40 days and nights that Christ spent in the desert, without food or water, preparing for his sacrifice on behalf of mankind.

The cans and non-perishable items collected will be a special way to support Catholic Charities’ mission of providing for the needs of the community through selfless service under the sign of love. From Feb. 10 through March 27, donations may be dropped off at the Guadalupe Community Center located at 1801 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., 78207 or Catholic Charities’ Main Offices located at 202 W. French Place, 78212. Organizations and churches may request information about donation bin drop-off and pick-up by contacting Lizzy Nemeth at (210) 226-6178 or [email protected].

Also, through these 40 Days, we hope to deepen the Catholic faith of youth and young adults, as well as the men and women who help educate them.

Service opportunities include mentoring and tutoring children, organizing donation drives, sorting and stocking of food donations, distributing food to seniors and families in need, painting, landscaping, assisting veterans, volunteering at events and many more opportunities. Catholic Charities is calling for groups and individuals to say “yes” to this opportunity to make a positive impact on our community and display our Catholic faith through service. There are many ways to help through volunteer opportunities facilitated by Catholic Charities.

Participation with the 40 Days of Service Campaign will help engage the archdiocese in the spirit of Lent. For more information and to find out what to do to help, contact Paul Stevens at (210) 222-1294 or [email protected].
