Archdiocese issues statement on the death of Howard E. Butt, Jr.

We are saddened to hear about the death of Howard E. Butt, Jr. He dedicated his life to philanthropy and his faith, and has been honored on numerous occasions nationally and locally for his ecumenical outreach and work in connecting both the secular and religious worlds.

For more than five decades, countless parish organizations and youth groups across the archdiocese have held retreats and workshops and been the beneficiaries of the generosity of The H.E. Butt Foundation’s Laity Lodge ecumenical Christian retreat center in the Texas Hill Country.

His impressive record of accomplishment was a reflection of his energy, enthusiasm, and great devotion to his beliefs. He was especially committed to sharing with others his unique grasp of the integration of work and faith.

All of us are very grateful for the gifts of his life and service to San Antonio and beyond.He will be greatly missed.We extend prayer condolences to his family and friends during this time. We mourn the loss of one who gave so much in so many different ways throughout his many years of generous service.
