Archbishop Gustavo’s comments at Tricentennial Day of Reflection on May 1

As we celebrate on this day the 300th anniversary of the founding of our beautiful city, beginning with the establishment of the Mission San Antonio de Valero, now known to us as the Alamo, our hearts are filled with both gratitude and hope. Faith in the hearts of Franciscan Priests, led them here since 1709. They worked with the Native people and gave the name of San Antonio to the river and the city. We are grateful that our city was established on the basis of faith, a faith that was meant to be shared with the many people who would be part of this community. A faith in God as the author life, the source of creation, and the inspiration for our highest human aspirations. Our hearts are filled also with hope. Hope that we may continue this great legacy we have received from our ancestors. Hope that we will be a city of love and respect. Hope that we will be a city of people who look upon one another as brothers and sisters. Hope that we will be a city that cares compassionately for the weakest, the poorest, and the neediest among us.

Oh God, we turn to you now and ask for your blessing upon our city, upon all people who call San Antonio their home. We need your love and guidance to be good stewards of all we have received. We need your inspiration to lead us to be not only a good earthly city, but also a city that is a reflection of your heavenly city, where charity, justice, and love reign. Guide us with your divine wisdom, and bring the hearts of many to honor and worship you in spirit and in truth. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. St. Anthony of Padua, patron of our city, pray for us.
