What You Make Possible: Impact Highlights

Seton Home: Building Trust and Families

How do you build trust on a foundation of pain, fear, and neglect? How do you break cycles of abusive and unloving experiences in a generation? How do you positively transform lives? The staff and volunteers at Seton Home face these questions head-on as they work daily towards rewriting histories of trauma into bright and loving futures. For the 24 families living at Seton Home, the facility is their chance to renew their trust in human relationships, for many, it may even be their first opportunity to even build it. The teenage mothers, removed from their homes by Child Protective Services due to abuse, neglect, and sexual assault, need shelter, food, clothing, a way to continue their education, and a safe place to begin motherhood and raising their children. Additionally, Seton Home provides its residents with counselling, parenting classes, and the tools that they need to, as one volunteer said, “Grow in faith…faith in people, restoring relationships…[and knowing] that these workers are not going to harm them, they’re trying to help them.” With your help, Seton Home has been helping pregnant teenagers in crisis become loving mothers to babies with happier futures.

Seminarians in the Community

"For a priest, everything is ministry.” At twenty-two, most young men in college are busy preparing for graduation and contemplating the next step in their lives. At twenty-two, this third year seminarian serves his contemporaries as a campus minister knowing that “Anytime that you interact with anybody, you’re fulfilling the role of being Jesus Christ to that person.” He sees his ministry assignment as a benefit to both the college students as well as himself. “Sometimes, when people ask about our faith, they ask for a drink of water and we turn on the hose. This opportunity is teaching me how to give them that drink of water…exposing them to that dialogue without taking them out of their comfort zone. It puts me in a place to see where most people are.” Each semester, Assumption Seminary sends out its students on different ministry assignments where they learn the aspects of the priesthood that no amount of classroom time can accurately teach them. Donors’ generosity make this new generation of Christ’s most devoted servants possible, giving them the financial support that makes their formation a time solely focused on prayer, learning, and service.
