Open hearts for migrants and refugees
The images and stories that came to light throughout the past weeks as the result of a “zero tolerance” and “family separation” policy at the US-Mexico border demand from all of us a profound discernment over what we are called to do today to alleviate the suffering of those who have been affected by such measures. They are also a call for us to discern the steps we can take to assure that the kind of just and merciful comprehensive immigration reform that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has been promoting for years is finally approved.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
The USCCB suggests the following ways to help solve the problems derived from family separation:
• Pray for the safety and well-being of migrant and refugee families, as well as our country’s leadership
• Speak up. Call your representatives and/or print, sign and deliver the postcard that can be found here.
• Take action. For example:
1. Volunteer with Catholic Charities San Antonio or other similar institutions
2. Write a letter to the Editor calling for the reunification of the affected families and immigration reform
3. Urge your parish to adopt a parish in one of the three Northern Triangle countries of Central America where most of the migrants are coming from)
• Give. Financially support agencies that are helping families and children impacted by the crisis, such as Catholic Charities San Antonio or the Catholic Legal Immigration Network.
• Learn more.
1. Get informed about the facts through reliable news sources; meet with migrant and refugee families through your parish or reach out to organizations in our community aiding these families, such as Catholic Charities San Antonio.
2. Learn about Church teaching on welcoming the stranger, immigration and the movement of peoples through the USCCB website, or visit the Vatican’s Migrant and Refugee page for Saint Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis’s World Migrants Day Addresses.
3. Explore documents such as Stranger No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope, a joint pastoral letter from the Bishops of the United States and Mexico which integrates Scriptural and social teaching into a cohesive vision that informs the bishops’ advocacy efforts, or the pastoral statement Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity.

Among Us: Unity in Diversity.
