Office of the Diaconate

A Message frm Msgr. Pat Ragsdale
Director of the Diaconate Office

The vision of the Diaconate Office is to help with a process of discernment-by forming men academically, spiritually and emotionally as to whether the Lord is calling them to serve in the Church Community of the Archdiocese in this particular ministry that calls one to serve under the guidance of the pastor of a particular parish. There are, at times, special ministries one might be called to outside of parish ministry.

The formational process helps to access the particular gifts and talents they will bring to this ministry. In addition, we empower these candidates to become more familiar with the rich diversity of cultures within our Archdiocesan community. Through a study of documents on social justice and in collaboration with Assumption Seminary and Oblate School of Theology, we will be able to reach this objective, along with the other components of formation in our Diaconate Program.

The role of a candidate, spouse and family, is an important factor in our program. Through the support of the spouse, and their attendance at classes and the annual retreats, the candidate is strengthened in his call to serve the Church. Working together, a balance is maintained between their family life and the obligations of academic and spiritual formation.

Interested in Becoming a Deacon

If you feel that you may be called to become a deacon, first we encourage you to reflect on it in prayer. Next, schedule some time to visit with your pastor about the diaconate and seek his counsel.

We would also suggest that you talk with deacons about their vocation and their responsibilities to get a clear understanding of what a deacon does and is.

Most importantly, discuss this with an open heart with your wife and family, if you are married. Then contact the Office of the Diaconate at 210-930-8118.
