Archbishop Gustavo comments on the selection of Bishop Cupich.
The appointment of Bishop Blase Joseph Cupich, successor to Cardinal Francis Eugene George, OMI as Archbishop of Chicago will be a blessing to the Catholic Church there. It is with great joy and gratitude I thank Pope Francis for this inspired choice. I am confident Archbishop-designate Cupich will enrich the faith of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago, for whom I will always feel warm affection.
Archbishop designate Cupich will bring a keen intellect and solid understanding of Church teaching to the important issues that will challenge the Church in years to come. Through the years his brother bishops at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, (USCCB) sought out his perspective and counsel, showing great respect for his knowledge, practicality, and pastoral sensitivity.
